Letting a Truganina house: the standards to meet before you advertise
Since late 2025 a Victorian rental must comply with the minimum standards when it is advertised. Locks and doors are where many fall short.
In short: The rules changed so that a home has to meet the standards before it is listed. A pre-listing check gives you time to fix things first.
The timing rule
From 25 November 2025, a Victorian rental must already meet the minimum standards when it is advertised or offered for rent. It is no longer enough to fix things before the renter moves in.
Locks and entry doors
External entry doors must lock, with a lock worked by key from outside. Damaged hardware, missing handles and doors that will not latch are the usual ways a house fails it.
Doors that stick
A sliding door off its track can stop it closing and locking properly. It is usually a small repair.
Planning repairs
Book the inspection before you appoint an agent to list the property. The report gives you a list your trades can work through, and we can return to confirm.
