Structural soundness in a rental: which cracks matter
The structural soundness standard requires the home to be structurally sound and weatherproof. How we judge visible cracking and frames in a rental check.
In short: A rental does not have to be perfect, but it must be structurally sound and keep the weather out. Cracks and failing frames are where the line is drawn.
What the standard says
The home must be structurally sound and weatherproof. That is judged from what is visible: walls, floors, ceilings, roof and openings.
Cracks at openings
Cracks running from window corners can point to movement. We note their width and recommend an engineer where they go beyond minor.
Frames and weather
Rusting frames and missing sealant let water in. Both bear on weatherproofing and should be fixed.
Reporting it
The report marks the standard met or not met and explains why, with photos.
